The kind that’s not about sequels and superheroes, as COVID restrictions relax and the Hollywood fun machine clambers back to life in theaters. But our kind of summer movie experience, with an issue that starts with reviews of Oscar winners and nominees ( Nomadland , Minari , and One Night in Miami ) and goes on to encompass the world of film.

Here’s where you’ll find: Director Shaka King, on the Oscar-winning Judas and the Black Messiah , which we also review. (Preview our review here .) Tracey Deer, whose  Beans  dramatizes 1990’s Oka Crisis, a violent standoff between the Canadian government and her Mohawk community. (She recreates it from the perspective of her 12-year-old self.) And the late screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière, who in a never-before-published interview discusses his collaboration with Luis Buñuel, on classics including  The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie  and  That Obscure Object of Desire .

Also on our itinerary: Agnès Varda, whose career is fully explored in a Blu-ray box set from the Criterion Collection. (Preview our article here ). Cuba’s Miguel Coyula Aquino, who blends live action and animation for challenging and controversial films like  Red Cockroaches and  Memories of Overdevelopment . The innovations of  Play for Today , British telefilms from the Seventies and Eighties revived in an ongoing series of Blu-ray box sets. And Phillip Lopate on one of his favorite Antonionis, the overlooked  Le amiche .

Plus: Blu-rays, with reviews that include Criterion editions of Alan J. Pakula’s The Parallax View and Larisa Sheptiko’s The Ascent , and Kino Lorber’s Clockwise , starring John Cleese.
